June 19, 1940 - January 31, 2017

Bernard Perry (Jack) Hack, Jr., 76, a 50 year resident of Burlington, WA, passed away peacefully in his home on January 31, 2017 after a two year battle with cancer.

Bernard, "Jack", was born in St. Paul, Nebraska. He was the middle child of eleven to Bernard Perry Hack and Ruth Irwin. He graduated from Central City High School in 1959.

He came to Washington state with his friends to work in agriculture. Harold & Edith Phelps, of Yakima, took him in as part of their family. When he went back to Nebraska, a recruiter suggested he join the Navy. While stationed in Oak Harbor, he met his future wife at the 'A & W' in Mount Vernon. Later, after an extension, he was able to come to Mount Vernon and marry Toia Eden, in 1966. They bought a house in Burlington and lived there for about 48 years. They have two children, Todd & Terra.

Jack worked at Stokely Van Camp, Witco, Inc., and ended his career working for Skagit County at the Transfer Station.

An avid bowler, a recreational softball player and coach (The Bunnies team), and later in life golfing became his participation sport. Always a sports fan, especially the WSU Cougars, where son, Todd, graduated. He attended most of the home games at Burlington-Edison High School, especially football and baseball, cheering on the Tigers. He was a familiar face at these games and popular with the players. Jack never spoke an unkind word of friend or foe.

As a member of the Foresters and the American Legion Post #91 of Burlington, he attended many events to sponsor those organizations.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, half-brothers; John and Arden, half-sister Fern (Orville) Meyer; brothers Ray (Louise), Bob, Cecil and sister Bernadine (Dale) Hedges. Also a daughter-in-law, Holly (Todd's wife) McArthur and a favorite niece, Ashley Grimes were in his and our thoughts.

Jack is survived by wife, Toia: son, Todd (Chula Vista, CA); daughter, Terra Peters (Marysville, WA); his granddaughter, Elizabeth (Justin) Yuhas (Marysville, WA) as well as a great-granddaughter, Aurora Peters and a great-grandson Jack Ryan Yuhas.

We want to thank the team at the Cancer Care Center for their kind attention to Jack. Krista and Tanya of the Hospice of the Northwest came often to help Jack be comfortable in his last month. Home Attendance Care helped with his daily comforts, Morgan the home care aid, came to visit with jack as well as assisting with duties around the home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given in Jack's name to Hospice of the Northwest, 227 Freeway Dr., Ste. A Mount Vernon, WA 98273; Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Center, 307 S. 13th Street, Suite 100, Mount Vernon, WA 98274; or to The American Legion Post #91, 721 Fairhaven Ave., Burlington, WA 98233.

Memories

From Karla Strand

My heart is heavy for those who were closest to Jack. May memories of him provide some comfort to you as you grieve this loss.

I will always remember him as such a kind and patient man as he showed me the ropes at the scalehouse when I began working for Skagit County. Such patience! He never said an unkind word and was always so proud of his lovely wife and awesome kids.  He set a fine example for how I wanted to be as an adult.

Rest in peace, Jack. You will be missed.
