Ralph Clayton Helms Jr. left this world peacefully on February 9, 2013, in Bellingham WA at the age of 65. He passed away in his home Saturday morning after a heart attack.

Clay was born on December 11, 1947, in Phoenix AZ to Clayton and Inez Helms. Clay was an only child and grew up in Phoenix. He attended Arizona State University where he received a degree in mathematics. Afterward, Clay moved to Grayford Texas where he taught high school math. It was there that he met and fell in love with Delores Williams. They were married in April of 1973 in Texas. Clay served as an officer in the Air Force for 14 years where he received numerous awards and commendations for his service. Through this, he had the amazing opportunity to travel the world with his wife.

Clay was an entrepreneur and a lifelong teacher. He started two successful businesses in Stephenville Texas where he lived for over 20 years raising a family and contributing to the community. He was an exceptional gardener and loved to spend time watching things grow. Anyone who had the opportunity to see his beautiful backyard oasis can attest to the fact that Clay had a very green thumb. He was an avid reader and was always eager to continue learning. Clay had a passion for cooking, baking and gourmet food. He was bold and adventurous in the kitchen as he was always trying new recipes and expanding his repertoire.

Clay is survived by his two daughters Jessica and Lindsey Helms, his grandson Alexander Pelfry, and his sweet canine companion Charlie. Clay is also survived by the many friends who's lives he touched during his time here. His bright and positive spirit impacted us all. His kind soul will forever be remembered and deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held in Clay's honor at the Stephenville Historical Museum on March 24, 2013, at 2:00 pm.

Memories

From Victoria Jossl…

I was so sorry to find the notice of Clayton's death. We were classmates at Central High in Phoenix. We both enjoyed music, and attended the Phoenix Symphony together for a year.

I was a freshman at Central High School in Phoenix.  I was a baton twirler and one day our band director decided I should learn to play the clarinet.  He assigned this task to Clayton who was a senior and I believe first chair of the clarinet section.  I have recently been telling friends about this and wondered about Clayton.  He was so kind and patient to a very slow learner!  I'm so sorry to find he has passed.  He touched my life.

From Kim Webb

I am sorry for your loss. I assume this is going to his darling daughters. I was one of your Dad's math students at Graford High School. He was such a Great teacher. We were all so saddened when he had to leave teaching & go back in the service. None, none of the replacements could even come close to his teaching ability. I have not talked with him since he left Graford but I am happy he was able to enjoy the life of parenthood. Good luck to both of you. You had a very Nice Dad.   Sincerely,  Kim Webb
