Donald W. McKeehen

With sadness at his passing but joy for a life well lived, we celebrate Donald "Don" Whitney McKeehen. Born May 10, 1930, in Spokane, Washington to parents Cecil W. and Ina Mae McKeehen, Don passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, at his home in Bay View, Washington, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community.

Don was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Patricia "Patsy" McKeehen. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; his sons Doug (Jean Maier), Bob (Connie), and Dave (Kalise); and his daughter Valya Coole. He will also be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and by his first wife and special friend Jan Orr.

Don graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, and the University of Washington in Seattle. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.

Throughout his life, Don worked in a variety of fields, including radio and television broadcasting, advertising, and civil service for Skagit County, where he made a lasting impact on the community. His professional journey was only one part of his vibrant life. Don was an active member of the La Conner Rotary Club, the Skagit Valley Camera Club, the Fidalgo Fly Fishers, and Ducks Unlimited, organizations through which he forged deep friendships and enjoyed many meaningful experiences.

Don had a deep love for the outdoors. He spent countless hours canoeing, often with family in tow, fishing the waters he loved, and photographing absolutely everything -- especially nature. Above all, Don treasured time spent with his family, where his warmth, humor, and wisdom will be fondly remembered.

At his request, no memorial service will be held. We hope you'll remember him next time you're outdoors, fishing, canoeing, taking a picture, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a remembrance in Don's name, we would be honored if you chose one of these organizations: the Padilla Bay Foundation, the Bay View Fire Department/Skagit Fire District 12, the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation, or the Wooden Boat Foundation.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of the Northwest, as well as to the caregivers of 7 Sisters Homecare and Catholic Community Services, for their compassionate care during Don's final days.

May he rest in peace, forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
