Muriel May (Rasmussen) Leibrant, 85, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, surrounded by family and in the care of Whatcom Hospice House. Muriel resided at North Cascade Health and Rehab since her husband John’s passing in May of 2022. Muriel is survived by son Monty (Sande) Leibrant, and daughter Belva (Carl) Tyska. Muriel leaves behind five grandchildren; Monica Leibrant (Ben Fischer), Chris (Stephanie) Leibrant, Miranda Eberly, Aaron (Brittany) Tyska, and Alex Tyska. She also had five great grandchildren; Ira, Audrey, Owen, Elizabeth, and John.

Muriel was born in 1939 to Bjarne Rasmussen and Vera May (Stead) in Bellingham, Washington. Muriel was the third of four children. She is survived by brother Frank Rasmussen and sister Jo Ann Fjellman. She was preceded in death by brother Don Rasmussen.

Muriel was a lifelong resident of Whatcom County and spent her younger years with her widowed mother and two older brothers, Frank and Don. She later welcomed baby sister Jo Ann to her family after her mother remarried. Muriel graduated from Meridian High School in 1957. John and Muriel wed in July of 1957 and they enjoyed 64 years of marriage.

Muriel first became a mother in 1959 and was a housewife before venturing out in the late 60’s to a couple of unique occupations. Her first job title was Census Taker. Later, she was one of the pioneering female shipwrights at Uniflite, shipbuilders in Bellingham. She eventually moved to the sewing department  and crafted upholstery and the huge canopies for the boats. John and Muriel were self-employed at both home building and sewing businesses.

Muriel studied drafting in high school and designed and drafted the homes that she and John built for the family and eventually sold to make room for the next building adventure. Muriel had a deep enjoyment of a variety of crafts and was a prolific amateur photographer. She continued to enjoy crocheting and reading until her passing.

Muriel’s gentle strength and quiet smile will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

From Vernon and Kar…

Muriel was one of my most positive people I ever knew. No matter what you said she would always agree with you. That was the best way to get along with John! Her handwork skills were outstanding. She was a great sister in law. Blessings, Karen Leibrant
