Service Information
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2530 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham, WA, with a reception following at the church.
Doris Ellen (Grassmeyer) Heathers of Bellingham went home to the Lord, Monday, September 25, 2017. She was born April 8, 1923 at home in Bellingham to John & Ida Grassmeyer.
She was a lifetime member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Bellingham and was their organist for 71 years. She was a 75 year member and a Past Matron of Maple Leaf Chapter No. 58 Order of Eastern Star (OES) in Bellingham and was their organist for 51 years. She was also the organist for Rainbow for many years and received the Grand Cross of Colors, the highest award that one can receive. She was also the organist for the Norwegian Male Chorus for 62 years. She was the pianist for choirs & assemblies at both Franklin Jr. High School, where she lettered in music, & at Bellingham High School, where she graduated in 1941. She is survived by her 6 children, Laina Jansma (Ken); Julie Carney (David Barber); Jeanne Weissenborn (Eric) of Bellingham; Sherman Heathers (Lynne) of Shelton, WA; Curtis Heathers of Blaine, WA; Nita Smith (Lisa Mitchell) of St. Petersburg, FL. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and her sister, Florence Hays of Seattle, WA. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, John & Ida Grassmeyer, her husband P. Ward Heathers (married 39 years, passed away in 1982) & her sister, Josephine Remington. She has always attributed her longevity to her faith in God, love for her family & her music. She enjoyed Easy Crossword Puzzles, Avon, her police scanner & she loved to laugh. We would like to thank Alderwood Park Convalescent Center & Hospice for the care that they gave our mother the last two years of her life. Memorials can be sent to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
