It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, whose life was full of love for his family, compassion, and hard work. Emil Louis Baijot, 90 years old, passed away suddenly but peacefully on December 19th at home. His loving family and friends will always cherish the memories they shared with him.
Born on February 4, 1933, in Seattle WA, Emil was the third child of Louis and Suzanne Baijot. He grew up in Edmonds and was known for his kind and friendly nature. He had a curious mind and a love for learning, which led him to initially enroll in pre-law at Stanford University before deciding to pursue an Industrial Design degree from the University of Washington. Upon graduation, he began his career as an Industrial Designer at Boeing and over 10 years quickly rose to become one of the most respected designers and managers in the company. As a Senior Supervisor, he provided graphic support to Boeing’s strategic Minuteman Missile Program.
Dad also attended Officer Candidate School in the U.S. Army and was a 1st lieutenant stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict.
New opportunities came, and Dad left Boeing and brought the family north to the Yukon River where he served as the General Manager and Postmaster of Sheppard Trading Company in Mountain Village, Alaska running the village stores and fish cannery until they moved to Bellingham WA in 1977. He was a Custom Home Designer and Builder for more than 40 years including Seattle Times Home Designer/Builder of the Year in the late 1960's.
In 1957, Dad met the love of his life, Joan Sheppard, and the two were married in 1958. Together, they raised four children, three daughters Lianna Hooper (Steve), Laura Baijot, Kara Baijot-Clary (Mark), and a son Josh Baijot (Jolene). Emil was a devoted husband and father, who always put his family first. He enjoyed spending time with his children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren....his love and company will be missed dearly.
In his free time, Dad had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid reader, a lover of music, and enjoyed traveling to new places. Dad was a FreeMason and a Gyro Club international President and Secretary/Treasurer/Editor. He started the Bellingham Gyro Club and enjoyed travel and friendships across the US and Canada. While living in Alaska, Dad was a keen sportsman, avid hunter, and fisherman. Dad also enjoyed being a member and playing golf at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club with his friends, family, and associates. He was always up for a challenge and was known for his adventurous spirit.
A lover of good red wine, old single malt Scotch, and Rum, Dad was also an excellent card player and a pleasure to sit and visit with. Dad will be remembered for his warm and caring personality, his sense of humor, and his unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many people and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
