Evelyn Margaret (Gerber) Dickinson

Evelyn Margaret (Gerber) Dickinson of Bellingham passed away peacefully Sept. 12, 2012, at Whatcom Hospice House. She was 84.

Evelyn was born June 6, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the sole child of Gustav and Beate (Bruins) Gerber. She was raised in New York and graduated from high school in Queens, N.Y., in 1942. Having developed a strong appreciation for education, she continued her studies at a local community college. Besides raising three children, she was employed as an elementary school and church secretary during her working years.

She and Charles Ralph Dickinson were married July 3, 1948, in New York. The couple made their first home in Bellingham and later settled in Burien, Wash., where they lived for more than 30 years. Following their retirement, the couple moved to Benson Lake in Mason County, Wash., where they had built their retirement home.

After her husband’s death, Evelyn continued to care for the lakefront home until 2010, when she returned to Bellingham to be near her youngest daughter and the family’s early roots. She is survived by her three children: Kathleen M. Cohen, Kenneth B. Dickinson and Karen E. Robins; five grandchildren: Christopher Cohen, Eric Cohen, Karinn Dickinson, Haley Dickinson and Devin Robins; and two great-grandchildren: Carter Cohen and Skylar Cohen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Dickinson, and by her parents.

At her request, no services are planned. Committal will be at Green Acres Memorial Park in Bellingham.
