Hendrika Remillard
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 2nd, 11AM, at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church.
Hendrika Van Rij – Remillard passed away on December 20, 2014.
Riet was born July 24, 1933 in Velsen, The Netherlands, daughter of Arie and Hendrika (Mol) Van Rij. She emigrated to Canada in the early 1960s, then after a few years she moved to the USA. With her family, she moved around the country, from North Dakota, to Minnesota, to South Carolina, to Ohio, to Washington DC and then on to Northwest Washington, raising her sons in Blaine.
Riet loved to bake and sew for her family. She loved to walk in the outdoors. She was a very loyal friend, and until very recently still wrote and received letters with friends from the many places she had lived. She loved to travel, she hiked in the Alps as a young woman, camped with her family, made yearly visits to her son in England, and went on walking trips with Elder Hostel. She volunteered for a number of different organizations over the years, and loved to help people.
She is survived by three sons: Ralph (Susan) in England, Scott (Gladys) in Seattle, and Boyd in Boise. There are four grandchildren: Joey and Elise in England, Abbey in Seattle, and Ann Sophie in Boise.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00 on Friday, January 2, 11AM a Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church.
Donations in her memory can be made to the National Alzheimers Association.

From Betsy Cherednik
Riet always knew how to make me laugh. Her kindness and big-heartedness was always there especially when she worked at the food bank. While it was sad her illness caused her to forget me, I still enjoyed her sense of humor and stories about the Netherlands. My prayers are with her family.

Riet was a regular customer at the Mount Vernon Library for many years. She was always very friendly. I enjoyed visiting with her. Blessings.

I worked with Riet at the Blaine, WA library while I was a high school student. She was a very funny and bright lady. She did lovely needlework of which she made me two Hummel cross stitch samplers which I still cherish. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.

Riet certainly had a heart for service, as she demonstrated in large quantities when she volunteered with Neighbors in Need Food Bank. Riet was also a member of the Board of Directors; she would often sit back and quietly listen while all the facts were presented; she would then make her case for or against a particular issue. I also sat in Worship with Riet over the years at Mount Vernon Presbyerian Church. Riet was VERY proud of, and loved, her family and would often share stories about meals they shared together on her birthday or other special occasions.
Thoughts and prayers to the Family. Riet was a special soul!
